Pim Martens appointed at Stellenbosch University


Pim Martens is appointed extraordinary professor at the South-African Stellenbosch University as off January 1st 2011. Martens’ chair is embedded in the School of Public Management and Planning of Stellenbosch University. These extraordinary chairs aim to affiliate professors with unique knowledge and qualities to the university. Pim Martens will mainly be supervising PhD students in the field of ‘sustainability science’.

Harro van Lente and René Kemp Inauguration Ceremony

On 12 November 2010, 16.00, Harro van Lente and René Kemp gave their inaugural lectures in the Aula at Minderbroedersberg. In his inaugural lecture on the “production of needs” Prof. Harro van Lente addressed the relation between needs and innovation. The title of Prof René Kemp’s inaugural speech was “Steps into the right direction: innovation for sustainable development”

On 11 November 2010, 14.00, Jeanine Schreurs defended her thesis: ‘Living with Less: Prospects for Sustainability’. Promotors: Prof.dr. Pim Martens and Prof.dr. Gerjo Kok.

PhD ceremony Niko Roorda

On 21 October 2010 14.00, Niko Roorda defended his thesis: ‘Sailing on the winds of change. The Odyssey of Sustainability of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands’. Promotors: Prof. dr. Pim Martens and Prof. dr. L. Janssen.

Marc Dijk awarded Hustinx Scholarship

On the occasion of the opening of the academic year Marc Dijk, PhD at ICIS, was awarded the 2010 Edmund Hustinx Scholarship, a grant of €7500. The jury selected Marc because of the quality of his project ‘Green Mobility: a study of product competition, socio-technical constituencies and technology spillovers’. The Hustinx Foundation aims to support original young researchers with an already excellent record during the first years of their scientific career.

On 23 September 2010, 16.00, Mark Dijk defended his PhD thesis ‘Innovation in Car Mobility: Co-evolution of demand and supply under sustainability pressures’. Promotor is prof. dr. Rene Kemp.

PhD ceremony Akua Britwum

On 10 September 2010, 14.00, Akua Britwum will defend her PhD thesis ‘Union democracy and the challenge of globalisation to organised labour in Ghana’. Promotors are prof. dr. Pim Martens and prof. dr. Kwame A. Ninsin.

Yvo de Boer appointed as professorial fellow Climate Change Policy at ICIS

Yvo de Boer was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from 4 September 2006 to 1 July 2010. He was appointed by the Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 10 August 2006.

From July 1 2010, Yvo de Boer joined ICIS as a professorial fellow ‘Climate Change Policy’
